Land Rover ending production of the Defender
Thursday, October 10th, 2013The Land Rover Defender has been in production for over 67 years. It has not always been known as the Defender, using previous name plates such as the series I and II. Later being called the Ninety and One Ten. The Defender has been used as a go to Off-road work horse for many militaries, farmers, and civilians and has proven to be one of the best off-road vehicles ever produced. However, Production will be coming to a close in 2015 at Land Lovers factory in Solihull, England. Land Rover was expected to phase out the Defender in 2017, however, due to strict emissions requirements the Defender is not able to be retrofitted to meet new clean air guidelines.
We can expect a new Defender model in the next few years to replace the outgoing model. The next-generation Defender will not be based of the DC100 concept which was shown at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, and Land Rover has not released any details to what we should expect. Land Rover did claim that we would get a first glimpse of its replacement in 2015. Hopefully, the Defender II will do justice to the rich heritage of the outgoing Defender. We will have to wait and see.
